API Varco Top Drive Parts Drilling Rig Spare Parts Upper / Lower IBOP Assembly

The IBOP Assembly for top drive is used in the top drive system. It consists of an Upper IBOP and a Lower IBOP, which are connected in series for the top drive drilling system. The assembly can withstand high pressure from both upward and downward directions. Its working pressure can reach 10,000 psi or 15,000 psi. The bore of the valve body and all internal components are specially treated to prevent corrosion, ensuring a long service life.

As the piston inside the jar gradually moves upward through the cylinder, the working fluid (hydraulic oil) becomes pressurized and compressed due to its slow discharge rate. During this hydraulic delay, elastic potential energy begins to build up in the drill string. Once the piston reaches the release port, the hydraulic oil rushes out, causing a sudden pressure drop. This gives the piston a rapid upward thrust and releases the stored elastic potential energy in the drill string. When the jar pad strikes the bottom of the up-jar cylinder, an impact is generated. This strong dynamic load is then transferred to free the stuck drill string. A key advantage of this jar is its ability to be easily closed and reset, allowing for consecutive jarring operations.
